Back in March, my friend Heather and I headed up to Sacramento to check out Black Veil Brides play at this tiny little club called Ace of Spades. We wanted to avoid the dreaded afternoon commute, so we got to Sacramento early and killed time at a restaurant next door to Ace of Spades. It was around 7PM when we decided to get in line for the show. I was not prepared for all the young faces staring at us as we walked by. I felt old. I guess that’s how some people felt when they saw me hanging out at the Stone, the Omni, or on Sunset Strip back in the late ’80s and early ’90s. How the tables have turned.
Since the crowd was so young, the bar area was fairly empty, as was where Heather and I stood to watch the show. The majority of the crowd was crammed, like cattle, on the main floor. The opener, William Control, put on a good show. Think Depeche Mode, Erasure and Nine Inch Nails melded together — industrial meets Euro synth pop. When Black Veil Brides hit the stage, it was nonstop entertainment. The guys put on a damn good show. There was so much energy, they could have played for another two hours and I wouldn’t have minded!
